Call for Applications:
ENGAGE.EU Workshop for Early-stage Researchers
Who can apply? This event is open to all PhD and early-career researchers who are members of ENGAGE.EU partner universities
Dates: 19-21 May, 2025
Location: Toulouse
Application deadline: February 28, 2025
Pre-application information meeting: 11 February 2025, 12:00 CET/13:00 EET
ENGAGE.EU is an alliance of leading European universities in business, economics, law, and social sciences. Its objective is to equip European citizens with the requisite skills and competencies to navigate the challenges of the future. The objective of this interdisciplinary three-day research workshop is to provide early-stage researchers — PhD and early-career researchers up to four years after the PhD — from the ENGAGE.EU partner universities with the opportunity to benefit from the ENGAGE.EU network. In order to facilitate feedback and networking, senior scholars from all partner universities will also be invited to the event.
To meet the different needs of PhD candidates and more advanced early-career researchers, separate sessions will be organised for PhD and early-career researchers to ensure a tailored and beneficial event for all participants.
The workshop
This event will bring together early-stage researchers from the nine partner universities. The aim is to deepen the discussion on research projects and to develop ideas in relation to the three societal themes listed below. Participants can apply to join one of the three interdisciplinary “thematic tracks”:
- Societal and organizational responses to climate change
- Conflict and polarization in organizations and societies in Europe
- Artificial intelligence and the changing world of work
The core activities of the event will involve presentations by early-stage researchers (20-30 minutes) on their research related to one of the three themes, followed by discussion and feedback from peers and senior researchers. Each participant will also act as a discussant for at least one other paper, and senior discussants will be invited to facilitate and connect the discussion to the broader research theme.
Besides working in small groups, there will also be plenary sessions and interactive workshops related to your doctoral journey and research activities.
The event will also include a ‘3MT’ (Three Minute Thesis) competition, where participants will present their research project in an engaging and accessible way within three minutes, avoiding discipline-specific terminology as much as possible.
Opportunities for participating early stage researchers
The workshop will provide you with the opportunity to receive valuable feedback on your work and to expand your professional network by connecting with other early-stage researchers working on similar topics across different disciplines.
If your application is accepted, travel expenses from your home institution to and from Toulouse and accommodation costs will be covered, under the ENGAGE.EU programme, by your home university. The additional costs for academic and cultural events during the research stay will be met by UT Capitole.
Who can apply?
The ENGAGE.EU PhD workshop for early stage researchers is open to all PhD and early-career researchers (up to 4 years after the PhD) from all disciplines affiliated with the universities of the ENGAGE.EU alliance and who:
- work on a research topic related to at least one of the three proposed “tracks,”
- are interested in a collaborative interdisciplinary dialogue,
- want to engage in a pioneering project from a growing European network.
Selected Participants will be invited to:
- In advance: provide a working paper related to the chosen topic by 21 April 2025 (this can be a full paper or a short developmental paper of ca. 10 pages, depending on the stage of your research progress) and prepare a 3-minute oral presentation of your project before the event,
- During: actively participate in ENGAGE.EU early-stage researchers workshop activities, such as workshops, lunch meetings, and other group events. Present your paper, serve as a discussant for another paper, and give a 3-minute presentation of your research project.
- Before, during, and after the workshop: be willing to exchange ideas and interact with other participants about their research and related projects.
Pre-application information meeting and contact points
An online information meeting will be held on 11 February at 12:00 CET / 13:00 EET. This session aims to introduce the call for applications and answer any questions on the application process and research stay.
Outside of the information meeting, feel free to submit any funding-related questions to: engage-cellule@ut-capitole.fr
