Help Shape the Future of Student Participation in ENGAGE.EU

How can students play a more active role in shaping the future of ENGAGE.EU? What should democratic student participation look like within the Alliance? And how can students become more involved in its governance and decision-making processes?

The ENGAGE.EU Board of Learners invites students from across the Alliance to join the online Student Representation Workshop on 28 October 2026.

This interactive workshop will provide a space for students to exchange perspectives, explore different models of representation and develop recommendations for strengthening student participation within ENGAGE.EU. By bringing together students and representatives from different European networks and university alliances, the event will encourage an open discussion about the role students should have in the future development of ENGAGE.EU.

Important: This registration form is only for participants from European University Alliances and university organisations outside ENGAGE.EU.

The application period starts from 1–22 October 2026.

Background

ENGAGE.EU is preparing its next Erasmus+ proposal for the 2027–2029 period. Among the priorities identified by the European Commission is the democratic involvement of students in the joint governance and cooperation structures of European University Alliances.

Students are currently represented within ENGAGE.EU through the Board of Learners, which contributes to the Alliance’s work and provides a consultative student perspective to its governance bodies. The preparation of the next proposal creates an important opportunity to reflect on this model and explore how student participation could be further developed.

Should students primarily have an advisory role? Should they be given voting rights within certain governance structures? Are there other forms of representation that could make their involvement more democratic, inclusive and meaningful?

The Student Representation Workshop will place students at the centre of this conversation.

What to Expect

The workshop will begin with an introduction to the current model of student representation within ENGAGE.EU. Participants will learn more about the role of the Board of Learners and how students currently contribute to the Alliance’s activities and governance structures.

This will be followed by a panel discussion featuring:

  • One ENGAGE.EU Board of Learners Co-Chair
  • One President of the Erasmus Student Network
  • Three student representatives or co-chairs from other European University Alliances

The panellists will share their experiences and present different approaches to student representation, democratic participation and involvement in decision-making.

Participants will then work in groups to exchange ideas and formulate recommendations around three central questions:

  1. What should democratic student participation look like within ENGAGE.EU?
  2. How can student participation in the Alliance’s decision-making processes be strengthened?
  3. What role should students have in the governance and development of ENGAGE.EU?

The recommendations developed during the workshop will contribute to the wider discussion about the future governance of ENGAGE.EU and support the preparation of the Alliance’s Erasmus+ proposal for 2027–2029.

Important: This registration form is only for participants from European University Alliances and university organisations outside ENGAGE.EU.

The application period starts from 1–22 October 2026.
