Exploring sustainability from the classroom to the Norwegian fjords
What happens when students from across Europe come together to explore how values, sustainability, and strategy connect?
In late May, Bergen set the stage for a study tour that took students beyond the lecture halls and into the Norwegian landscape, offering real-world insights into sustainability in practice.
From exploring purpose in a career workshop to visiting a fish farm in the fjords of Hardanger, the ENGAGE.EU Study Tour at the Norwegian School of Economics (NHH) encouraged students to reflect on how their values can shape more sustainable futures.
Academic excellence and scenic beauty
The tour kicked off on May 26th, where students and the ENGAGE.EU governing board, meeting at the same time, were welcomed to NHH. The icebreaking activities set a friendly tone, allowing participants to get to know each other. The academic session on Sustainability in Communication set the tone for a broader view on Sustainability and how it shapes a company’s language and tone.
In a different sessions students were challenged on how to integrate sustainability to business strategy. They also had a career workshop on How values and purpose influence our choices. The day concluded with a funicular trip to the world-famous Mount Fløyen, offering breathtaking views of Bergen’s city centre.
On May 27th, the group embarked on a field trip to the picturesque Hardanger Fjord. The visit to the Lingalaks fish farm at Øystese was both educational and enjoyable, with students learning about sustainable aquaculture practices while savouring local salmon delicacies. On the way back to Bergen, the students enjoyed the majestic nature up close by the stop at the Steinsdals waterfall.
On May 28th, the final day at NHH began with a group photo overlooking Bergen. The sessions included one on behavioural development economics and one on the influence of ESG preferences in supply chain decisions provided diverse sustainability insights. The tour ended with a reflection workshop by the NHH Career Centre and the distribution of certificates.
Building sustainable connections
Participants formed meaningful friendships and connections, enhancing their personal and professional networks during the program. Moreover, they gained valuable insights into aligning their future career choices with their core values and sense of purpose, fostering a deeper understanding of how their aspirations could contribute to sustainable and impactful change in their chosen fields.
